The fossa ovalis is a small, hard-to-find depression in the right atrium. Many surgical procedures involve creating a puncture in the fossa ovalis to allow for passage of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to the left heart. Despite huge advancements in cardiology, this procedure has not changed much in more than 5 decades and has significant limitations.

The flexible atraumatic loop safely anchors to the fossa ovalis and helps define its shape. The radiopaque loop is clearly seen under fluoroscopy.
